LittleBigPlanet 2 announcement (UPDATE)

17:4908/05/2010Posted by Simeon PaskellNo Comments

The June edition of US magazine Game Informer is set to unveil details of the LittleBigPlanet 2 – sequel to one of the biggest success stories of this generation.

While we’ll have to wait for an official announcement (which is coming on Monday 10th May according to Media Molecule’s’ Twitterfeed which confirms that ‘It’s all true! We’re excited to say that we are making LittleBigPlanet 2′), initial rumours sound very encouraging indeed. The game will allegedly shift its focus away from 2.5D platforming and instead enable players to create whatever type of game they wish.

Example’s hinted at so far include real-time strategy and a multiple sackboy disco-dancing music video.
Though a sequel has long been rumoured, Sony and Media Molecule have repeatedly denied it’s existence. While the existing LittleBigPlanet community will no doubt be slightly concerned that a sequel may prove to be a little divisive, an even more flexible tool-set will no doubt be welcome by players and creators alike.

We can’t wait to see what Media Molecule have in store…and to see what sort of games players can come up with.

We’ll update this news story as soon as more details have been confirmed.

UPDATE:

The Playstation Blog (US) has now officially announced the existence of LittleBigPlanet 2 for the PlayStation 3 and confirmed a Winter 2010 release date. The announcement comes with the premier of the first trailer for the game which showcases everything from a Micromachine-type racer, to Breakout and Puzzle Bobble clones and a scrolling shooter. The press release is promising littlebig things:

‘First of all, it’s developed by Media Molecule, the extremely talented team that brought you the first game, so you know you’re going to get a special experience. LittleBigPlanet 2 will provide a whole new collection of tools and rules for fans to Play, Create, and Share, including an evolved approach to control and customization that has never been seen before.

LittleBigPlanet has always empowered users to create their own levels by utilizing the same tools as the development team. Now in LittleBigPlanet 2, we’ve upped the ante, giving players the ability to not only make better levels, but completely new games – think top-down racing games, multiplayer shooters, flying side-scrollers, RPGs, etc. The possibilities are really endless.

LBP2 will also have a loads of new features, including revamped graphics, a fresh storyline, added accessories and equipment for Sackboy, and much, much more – trust me I’m only scratching the surface here!’

So…are all you creators out there dribbling in anticipation?
