Gears of War 3 Revealed
The director of Epic Games, Cliff Bleszinski, who was looking to make an impact on Jimmy Fallon’s late night talk show, released a teaser trailer and spilled fresh details on the upcoming conclusion to the current Gears of War storyline.
Entitled Ashes to Ashes, the trailer focuses heavily on the grizzled visage of Dominic Santiago – now sporting some impressive facial hair – whom fans of the series will remember suffered a great emotional loss in the previous game. The ash-covered land, littered with the bodies of the dead in a visual moment inspired by Pompeii, serves as the latest battleground and hints at a bleaker world in this third and final act.
The trailer also contains shots of a female squad member working alongside the main character, Marcus Fenix in an attempt to drive back the Locust horde. Dom, appearing less than thankful at the last-minute save, stands with the group who are under fire from all sides. The trailer concludes with the words ‘Brothers To The End’ with an emphasis on the final two words.
Cliff Bleszinski has revealed at least one new enemy in the form of an insect that burrows out from the ground and can mutate once engaged, though the one found in the trailer looks to have been lifted straight from the desk of Lost Planet’s design team. New weapons have been promised, such as a double-barrelled shotgun, though here’s hoping for a more creative arsenal with which to decimate the horde.
Following the dramatic events of Gears 2, the Lambent will play a big part in the story and while these glowing, explosive enemies weren’t shown, this trailer likely confirms the rumoured details of an enemy that can move beneath the surface and mitigate your cover.
After the massively successful Gears of War 2, a third and final instalment was a given, though we do recall being told not to expect it this generation. Still, with some fresh faces, new weapons and more types of enemies with which to bloody up our chainsaw bayonets, there’s much to look forward to when the game hits in April 2011.
P.S. The haunting track that sets the scene is Heron Blue by Sun Kil Moon.
