Super Mario Galaxy has been awarded Best Game of 2008 at this year’s video game BAFTAs, beating Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Fable 2, Fallout 3, Grand Theft Auto IV and Rock Band to the coveted award.

The video game ceremony, which took place in London tonight, also saw Call of Duty 4 scoop three awards for Best Gameplay, Story and Character and People’s Choice Award.

The only other game to pick up multiple awards at the show was EA’s survival horror Dead Space, which picked up awards for Best Original Score and Best Use of Audio.

Other games to pick up awards included Left 4 Dead for Best Multiplayer, Professor Layton & The Curious Village for Best Handheld Game and Boom Blox for Best Casual Game.

LittleBigPlanet meanwhile was presented with an Artistic Achievement award, while other British development teams Lionhead Studios and Codemasters picked up awards for Best Action Adventure Game & Best Sports Game respectively.

Grand Theft Auto IV ,which was nominated for seven different awards, surprisingly went away empty-handed.
