Headstrong Games on reinventing The House of the Dead

hotd4Is the Overkill universe the future for House of the Dead, or is it simply meant as a spin-off to the core series?
Neil: It’s all down to SEGA, but we have ideas from where our characters came from and where they go to create an interesting Overkill universe. When we were concepting the characters and writing the script we wrote their whole biography.

And it’s not all revealed in this one, I suppose?
Jonathan: There are some plot threads that we’ve subconsciously left in there to be answered and picked up on later…

Neil: Don’t zip past the credits!

Something that’s sparked quite a bit of debate over the past few days is the fact that Overkill was given a higher score than Killzone 2 in the latest issue of EDGE. How does it feel to be rated higher than what is perhaps the most anticipated title of the year?
hotd5Neil: It feels pretty awesome! You know, because we thought we’re on the Wii, it’s a light gun game, it’s another on-rails shooter, we thought people would bring us down. But we’ve been super-impressed with the reception. We also thought it was going to be a bit marmite in that some people would love it and others find it grotesque, which is exactly what we set out to do! We actually had a review in a Swedish magazine which was the first one to hit the net and it was a 3/10. SEGA translated it for us and they were like, it’s too violent and there’s mentions of vice and prostitution, all that kind of stuff. We kind of took that as a big win – you know, we went for this Grindhouse exploitation and we managed to upset someone! No, we’re just so stoked; we’re constantly looking at Metacritic. I skipped home with EDGE’s review. We put a lot of effort into this game and I think that shows.

Mark: Factoring in the small size of the team and the time it took to produce, we’re just really happy with how it came out. We could definitely do more though!

The House of the Dead: Overkill is released today exclusively on Wii.

I’m still waiting for ONE interview wher the f****n journalists dont ask why a good core game isnt on the PS3/360. This sh*t is so fu***n annoying.

And Killzone 2 is one of the most anticipated game of the year???
Are you idiots on drugs? It wont even reach half of Street Fighter or Resident Evil levels of sales. Outside forums no-one knows wtf KZ2 is
