4. ASSASSIN’S CREED

Billed as a natural evolution of the stealth genre, Assassin’s Creed immediately reeked of an unwelcome stench. Many players hastily came to the conclusion that, once you’ve played the first level, you’ve played the entire game. A case of style over substance for Ubisoft Montreal if ever there was one.

    Great list, with some omissions….
Army of Two was more over-hyped than Kane & Lynch but suffered similar success.
MGS4 was no slouch of a game but considering the YEARS of hype and the fact it fell from sales charts and into bargin bins (in Japan no less) within 2 months certainly qualifies it for consideration.

Great list guys! I definately agree with all of them.. Just wish there was an eleventh spot to squeeze Army of Two in there. lol

You’re pretty much dead on with your picks, especially Halo 3.But i’de have to disagree with 2 of your picks. Both Heavenly Sword and Lair didn’t recieve anywhere near the hype of the other games. Both were delayed and almost forgotten by the time they came out.Add to the fact there weren’t many games for ps3 at that time made too high of expectations.Lair was a good game but did have shotty controls which were somewhat remedied later but the damage was done.Heavenly Sword was a great game, yes a hack and slash but never claimed any different.Even highly pro 360 reviewers like X-Play gave it 4 out of 5.Too Human should be on your list as well as the most over-hyped game of the last 15 years, Spore.I’de explain why these 2 should be on but i’de end up writing a novel.

too human could fit on here also… good list

I don’t think the author knows what “overhyped” means when he includes a game like Two Worlds, which had little to no hype and virtually no consumer awareness whatsoever. Where the list really fails is in its exclusion of GTA IV and MGS4.

  • Brian said:

This list is really dull. And why is Heavenly Sword on it anyway? I don’t remember that game being that hyped. And I thought it was a decent first generation game. You can do much better than this list.

  • RJ said:

This list does show some titles that were pretty crap.

But as far as over-hyped, I don’t think many of them were.

Halo 3, heavenly sword, HAZE and lair was overhyped but I think if you included games like GTA 4, MGS 4 (an interactive movies) and even the newest release Fallout 3.

Fallout 3 is rubbish, they spent years and years on this game and they can’t even get the character to walk properly, all they do is glide in the game.

I agrre with all except kane and linch, gta iv was way over hyped. im not saying it wasnt good im saying that for how much hype it got the could have put wayyy more gameplay into it. For one they still havnt made trophys on the ps3, and it didnt have the fun stuff that was in san andreas. Like the guns. I think you should have gotten the flame thrower and minigun. Also there werent enough cool cheats like riot mode. a lot of car cheats are missing. it just wasnt what i thought it was.

  • smileydude said:

this list is good but halo should be 1 or 2 and heavenly sward after lair

    Where is GTA4???

Thats Bullshit, halo 3 campaign was absolutly amazing till this day i still play it.

And who ever said MGS4 was overhyped is stupid as fuck because it was one of the most amazing games that have been produced, the sotryline fits into real day events and was a great experience it was like playing a movie or something.

And fallout 3? comeon has bethesda ever let you down? im just glad black isles aint making it anymore

Good list though i dont recommend halo 3 being on it. Halo 3 had a solid campaign regardless of the fact it wasnt as epic. However, its online has enuf replayability to last you the next few years. Furthermore, those fucktards that think MGS4 is overhyped please reffer to the 1.5 million sales in a single day, the 10 out of 10’s from the biggest sources in gaming including Gamespot, IGN, Gamepro and Famitsu, too bad your lack of intelligence prevent you from comprehending the achievement MGS4 is. Anyway, I would say Too Human deserves to be on this list as well.

  • RS said:

Halo 3 may have been good (even great) but it’s impossible to deny it was over hyped, I’ve never seen anything like the fuss that was created over that game.

Also what about Smash Bros Brawl, an utterly superb game but via the dojo Sakurai released little bits of info 5 days a week for about 8 months.
A tad excessive, it worked though.

  • DL said:

Halo 3’s campaign may not be great, but who cares when the online multiplayer is so good.

Games that need to be on the list which aren’t: GTA4, MGS4, Too Human and Banjo: Nuts and Bolts.

And most likely Killzone 2, once it’s released.

  • OD said:

Halo 3 is a POS, lol at you idiots who think it’s god’s gift to gaming. A series of almost unending set-piece shoot-outs is both downright unoriginal, unimaginative and tedious.

  • 99ultra said:

It’s strange, yes, haze was over hyped, but I think your missing the offline multiplayer with up to 15 bots, yes they are dumb at times, but It was very fun I still play offline multiplayer with 15 bots, I really think this guy should play it he might actually think its awesome.

  • Bashi said:

I agree with most of this list but Halo 3?! Yes, it obviously received a lot of marketing and a lot of people bought it, but that can’t detract from the fact that it offers one of the most refined, well implemented multiplayer experiences available. Theater mode? Screenshots? The Forge? DLC? Bungie.net? I feel the author of this list is doing Bungie and its community a disservice by lumping Halo 3 in with shoddy games like Haze. He focuses on the single player but that is still far superior to many games out there. It’s AI driven battles offer up a lot of replayability. I’m by no means a Halo fanboy I just think the author is indulging in elitism against a popular game.

  • DEVERAL77 said:

wow Halo 3 should be 1 its retarded and it had 20 year olds buying the master chief action figure, Two worlds was Really good,(at least now it is) but it wasnt hyped at all, MGS4 should be up there cause its good but just overhyped

  • theking said:

you all have a f___ing screw LOST i mean halo3, two worlds, ASSASSIN’S CREED, and i never herd of the other ones only herd of SHADOWRUN

  • theking said:
