Codemasters has announced that they’ll be publishing sandbox racer FUEL, due for release on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC in 2009.

Developed by Asobo Studios, FUEL is built on a cutting-edge proprietary engine that allows for a racing area of over 14,000 square km to deliver a “true next generation” racing experience. As well as the open world environment, FUEL’s dynamic weather system is sure to impress with its full day-night cycle and “destructive tornadoes, sandstorms, thunderstorms, lightning strikes, and blizzards that require mid-race strategy changes.”

“FUEL raises the bar in terms of scale and exhilaration for racing games. We begin with the largest racing environment to appear in gaming – ever. With our accelerated effects of climate change and dynamic weather system we add an extra dimension that change races on-the-fly and constantly presents new challenges to players,” said Sebastian Wloch, Chief Executive Officer, Asobo Studios.

The diverse terrain, dynamic weather, 16 player races and online functionality has certainly whet our appetite. Be sure to check out the first footage over on D+PAD TV.
