Rage will look worse on 360

id’s upcoming shooter Rage will look worse on Xbox 360 than PlayStation 3, programmer John Carmack revealed today.

Speaking at QuakeCon, Carmack stated that the compression needed to fit the open-world shooter onto two DVDs would hinder the visuals on Microsoft’s console, adding that royalty fees to include a third disc were simply too high to be feasible.

Carmack’s announcement isn’t the first time a multi-platform developer has publicly questioned the Xbox 360’s storage. Rockstar’s Sam Houser stated back in April that Microsoft would need to do something “to sort out” the 360’s lack of storage space.

Rage is due to hit shelves at some point next year.

As this generation progresses you have to wonder if this is going to become more of a problem as developers really begin to push the limitations of the 360 and PS3. Is this the 360’s equivalent of the dreaded PS3 install?

I remember a lot of people saying that DVD would suffice this gen and that there would be no advantage to having Blu-ray, but I suppose this is the first genuine proof that actually there is.

But then what is the answer for Microsoft? I don’t think an external Blu-ray drive or equivalent would go down particularly well.

Well, it sucks for Xbox owners now but without that one year head start Microsoft would be in all kinds of strife now, so from a business perspective they did the right thing.

I doubt the graphical consessions will be all that big anyway.
