Iron Man – the film – is as confident, knowing and purely enjoyable a summer blockbuster as Hollywood has made in years. Blessed with a career-defining performance from Robert Downey Jr and an almost perfect balance between real-world subtext and comic-book thrills, its giant robot action is lent the sort of tension and human interest that last year’s Transformers could only dream about.
